  • County Board approves contracts for variety of infrastructure projects
  • New safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Three Rosslyn bridges to be repaired

W&OD project

The Arlington County Board today approved three construction contracts for transportation projects throughout Arlington. All projects are part of the County’s latest Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) adopted last year.

“This is a busy time of year as we ramp up construction across the County,” Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette said. “It’s exciting to see these much-needed transportation improvements get underway.”

Safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists

The County Board authorized a $2 million contract with Sagres Construction Corporation for safety improvements to two of the County’s most heavily used bicycle trails. The project will improve three intersections along the W&OD shared-use trail near South Four Mile Run Drive – at South George Mason Drive, at the signalized entrance to the Barcroft Sports Complex and at South Oakland Street – and along the Custis Trail at the intersections of Lee Highway and North Scott Street, North Quinn Street and North Oak Street.

Specific trail improvements include high visibility crosswalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, improved trail alignment and upgraded pedestrian signals. Both trail projects are primarily funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program.

Park Drive concept design

Sagres Construction Corporation also was approved for a $1.7 million contract to improve safety and streetscapes at two Arlington Boulevard intersections, at Park Drive and at Manchester Street. Improvements will include new curbs and gutters, sidewalks, storm drain inlets and pipes, traffic signals and pavement markings. Project funding comes from federal aid and local general obligation bonds.

Bridge repairs

A $358,000 contract was authorized for Fort Myer Construction Company Corporation to repair three bridges in Rosslyn – the North Nash Street pedestrian bridge south of Key Boulevard, the 17th Street North bridge over Ft. Myer Drive, and the Ft. Myer Drive pedestrian bridge north of Wilson Boulevard. The repairs will prevent further deterioration and will extend the life of these structures. County PAYGO funds will be used for this work.
